After 6 long days of shooting, we are done! The Catchlight Team and friends have been bouncing around Thunder Bay shooting a commercial for TBayTel. With a good sized crew and lots of equipment we shot everywhere you can think of; Hillcrest Park, Thunder Bay Lookout, Boulevard Lake, and more! No matter where we went the community received us well. This was one great video production! We were up to catch the sunrise and didn’t sleep till we captured the sunset. Imagine it; a quick and well oiled machine trying to set up and be ready just in time to catch those first rays of sunlight shoot across Lake Superior! The footage looks magical! It was lots of hard work and great fun this week. Dollys, rails, overhead rigs, stroller rigs; we had our Canon 7D in some crazy places to make sure we got just the right angle. Below are just a few of our production stills from this project. Stay tuned!!
Recently the Catchlight team gathered a small crew and headed out to shoot a promotional video for Yuleys. (What are Yuleys exactly? Make sure to check out the video to find out!) It was hot and we were in the sun all day but we got some great footage! The location was spectacular; beautiful house with a photogenic pool. The video is almost complete, so check back to see the finished product!
Catchlight Video Solutions has long been good friends with Cinevate Inc. Now, in addition to using their products, we were asked to help showcase them in a educational, promotional video! Not to long ago, Dave, Piotr and Dennis Wood (Cinevate) set out to get some amazing footage using the Atlas 30 Linear Tracking System. It was a nice day and we were able to capture some beautiful images!
In addition to trying out the equipment, we used it to film a Cinevate University segment on the Atlas 30 LTS itself. We had a mix of studio and on location shooting that really helped to showcase this product. The footage we captured and the resulting video turned out great so check it out!!
Some of the Catchlight crew celebrated Canada’s 143rd birthday by spending the day at Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay, Ontario. It was an opportunity to stroll through the site, watch some reenactments and of course, shoot some footage just for fun. Although we had a bit of rain to contend with, we were able to capture some very cool footage. My personal favourite was the firing of the cannons which caused a tremendous bang and filled the air with a cloud of smoke. As of late our weapon of choice for most video productions has been the Canon 7D with a generous assortment of lenses ranging from 10mm to 400mm. The camera is rigged with Catchlight’s custom built cine package, known as the Core Rig, and uses parts designed and manufactured by Cinevate Inc.
In addition to great commercial video production, members of our team are engaged in all kinds of other activities. Michelle Derosier, Catchlight’s artistic director, also carries a degree in Social Work and uses film and video as a healing tool.
On June 2, as part of the Canadian Psychological Association’s (CPA) 71st annual convention in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Michelle traveled from Thunder Bay to give a workshop to health care professionals from across Canada. The topic: mental health and First Nations people. She occasionally does educational workshops andpresentations that promote the use of film as a tool for empowerment and healing – so much more effective than a pamphlet! Michelle presented the acclaimed film “Seeking Bimaadiziiwin” [Seeking "The Good Life] (which she wrote, co-produced and acted in) and spoke about the importance of story telling, culture and art as a way to build healthier communities and individuals.
The workshop was hosted by the Aboriginal Psychology Section, the Northern and Rural Section, and the Woman and Psychology
Section of the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). Michelle has been invited back by the CPA to do a presentation again next year!

A Catchlight Video Solutions’ crew of six completed a fifteen hour shoot of two television commercials for the Ontario Psychiatric Associate yesterday. Long day, yes, but the footage looks great. Throughout the day we shot four locations and worked with three talented Thunder Bay actors as well as Andrew L Howlett , MD who was kind enough to fly in from Toronto to spend the day with us. Ontario Psychiatric Association President Dr. Paul Mulzer wrote the script for the tv commercial set titled ‘I Am A Psychiatrist,’ and also committed the whole day to be on location with us. A sincere thank-you to all involved.

We set up a time-lapse camera as an experiment during a recent commercial shoot for a local pharmacy. The space is Cinevate Inc.’s studio in Thunder Bay, ON (www.cinevate.com) which we had rented for the day.
Very little of the actual “shoot” is present because obviously we couldn’t have the shutter clicking away while recording sync sound. However, you get a real sense of just how much work a day in the studio can be. Ran out of card space for the full take down but it provides a good impression.
The camera shown here is a Canon 7D with a custom rails rig built from Cinevate components including the Atlas Mattebox and carbon fiber rails.
Pre-production stills from the “Collateral Damage” promotional video. This is Scott’s video request for participation in the project and was created in collaboration with Scott Chisholm and Krista and Daniel at 11-17. Production was executed by Catchlight Video Solutions.
